Special Notice

The internship is for a minimum period of three months with possibility for extension up to six month.

 

? Fall (September - December)

? Winter/Spring (January - April)

? Summer (May - August)

 

The United Nations internship programme does not provide remuneration.

All internship related expenses – travel, insurance, living etc. – are responsibility of the intern, sponsoring Government or institution.

The UN accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents, illness or death during the internship.

The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.

Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the end of the internship.

The intern must provide proof of enrolment in health insurance plan.

Interns are not staff members and may not represent the UN in any official capacity.

Org. Setting and Reporting

The Executive Office of the Secretary-General assists the Secretary-General in the establishment of general policy and in the executive direction, coordination and expeditious performance of the work of the Secretariat and of the programmes and other elements of the Organization, and in contacts with Governments, delegations, the press and the public. It further assists the Secretary-General with strategic planning, preparation of the annual report of the Organization, political, economic and inter-agency affairs, liaison and representation functions and fulfillment of the priorities and mandates set out by the General Assembly.

 

The internship is UNPAID and is full-time.

 

Applicants are encouraged to highlight their specific skills and/or experience in their cover note. They are asked to do so carefully in order to enhance the value of the internship for both themselves and the receiving Office.

Responsibilities

The Intern will report to the Chief, Administration and Management, Executive Officer.

 

Responsibilities will include:

 

?Supports analytics on UN system-wide / cross-cutting needs, priorities, resources, risks and performance; Researches and organizes information as and when requested;

?Develops dashboards and visualizations for senior managers and provide user support on financial data;

?Supports the preparation of background and option papers;

?Assists in collecting data from multiple resources;

?Assists in reviewing and analyzing data from multiple resources;

?Assists with the filing and storing of data as well as creating standard statistical and other reports;

?Creates and maintains excel databases Creates graphic elements to represent collected data;

?Researches and organizes information as and when requested and assists with analyzing trends;

?Other ad hoc related activities.

Education

To qualify for consideration for this internship by the United Nations Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

 

1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in Business Administration, Economics, or a related and relevant academic area;

 

2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) in Business Administration, Economics, or a related and relevant academic area;

 

3. Have graduated with a university degree as defined in (1) and (2) above;

 

4. Applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages must have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree;

 

5. Be computer literate in standard software applications, including database management, PowerPoint and Excel;

 

6. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

 

7. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme; however do please list all experiences on your application as well as interests, skills and knowledge in the following area:

 

? Keen interest in strategy, management, analytics and performance optimization;

? Excellent presentation and communication skills (knowledge of Adobe InDesign / Illustrator an advantage);

? Strong knowledge of data management techniques, quantitative / qualitative analysis and data visualization;

? Strong knowledge of analytics tools (e.g. PowerBL, Excel, PowerPoint, SAP Business Objects, Qlik, SQL, R);

? Experience in strategy / management consulting, analytics or data visualization is an advantage.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
