Org. Setting and Reporting

The position is located in the Policy Section of United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) within the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). For more information on UNMAS, please visit http://www.mineaction.org/unmas.

 

The internship is for six (6) months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

 

This position is available immediately.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority the Political Affairs Intern will be responsible for the following:

 

1. Assist in researching, drafting, and preparing documents and policies;

2. Conduct background research and provide support to concept papers on mine action policy issues, relevant conventions, and researching States compliance with mine action relevant treaties;

3. Identifying, reviewing and monitoring of key documents by UN legislative bodies, including in support of the United Nations Mine Action Monitoring and Evaluation Mechanism;

4. Assist in researching and elaborating draft strategies and policies;

5. Provide support to the planning and organization of events;

6. Provide support to the development of the Portfolio of Mine Action Projects;

7. Assist in outreach to UNMAS programmes to gather, synthesise and analyse data/information;

8. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor;

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

 

- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

 

- Be computer literate in standard software applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint;

 

- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

 

- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views;

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship position fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of an additional official language is desirable.
