Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

 

The UN Environment - Regional Office for West Asia, established in Manama, Bahrain, is one of the UN Environment’s six regional offices. It coordinates UN Environment’s Programme of Work in West Asia, providing the link between UN Environment’s Divisions and the countries of the region. Hence, UN Environment’s West Asia Office’s main objective is to develop relevant programmes to respond to the needs of the region, with a focus on enabling member states to achieve their visions for a sustainable future in line with the 2030 Agenda.

 

UN Environment, as the environment arm of the UN system, is mandated to address environmental issues and their management, and as such recognises the critical role of outreach and advocacy through campaigns and other awareness raising and special initiatives. For such initiatives to reach their full potential, the development of strategic partnerships with stakeholders, including governments, the private sector, global, regional and national organisations and civil society actors is essential.

 

The internship will support the implementation of such campaigns and the identification and follow up of relevant partnerships for their delivery.

 

The internship is UNPAID. The internship is for a duration of three months

Interns work 35-40 hours per week under the supervision of the officer to whom assigned.

Duty station: Manama, Bahrain

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

 

Under the overall guidance of the Regional Development Coordination Officer, the intern is requested to perform the following tasks:

1.Support the implementation of UN Environment campaigns in the West Asia region through ongoing research to identify opportunities with countries and strategic partners on the various UN Environment campaign themes.

2.Identify relevant interlinkages with similar approaches being implemented in the region to develop opportunities for partnership and upscaling.

3.Update information, prepare briefs and basic reports, stories for the media and UN Environment website on UN Environment campaigns being implemented in the region

4.Contribute to the engagement of the private sector in campaigns and other UN Environment programmes and projects, identifying potential partners, and compiling briefing materials.

5.Contribute to the regular updating of the partnerships database in the West Asia region.

6.Perform other duties as required

?Awareness raised on the UN Environment campaigns across the region

?Greater engagement of governments and other partners in UN Environment campaigns and a growing portfolio of related activities

?Enhanced private sector and other stakeholder engagement in the work of UN Environment in the region

?Established synergies with other related programmes in the region to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of support to member states.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);

c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation

 

Preferred area of study

environmental science, business administration, international relations, communications, law, or related

 

?Be computer literate in standard software applications.

 

?Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

 

?Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is an asset.
