Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Policy and Condition of Service Section, Office of Human Resources Management. The Internship is for six months and is unpaid.

 

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

 

? Conducts research on a diverse range of assigned issues using multiple research sources; selects relevant material, analyzes information and presents findings for internal review.

? Assists in the preparation of policy opinions/advice on a wide range of human resources matters of the Organization.

? Selects and evaluates a variety of documents, summarizes pertinent material, collects and analyses data and prepares background materials for assessment papers, studies, briefs and reports.

? Participates in technical meetings, conferences, and seminars and serves as secretary, as necessary (takes notes, draft summary reports, minutes, notes for the files or assessment reports for presentation to the head of the Section); monitors follow-up actions, etc.

? Contribute to the re-organization of the Section's share drive by reviewing and analyzing the contents of relevant documents; making a determination on the most appropriate relocation folder; and performing the movement of the electronic files to such folder.

? Initiate required actions for the potential migration of internal electronic documents to United Nation internet-based platform.

? Assist with the reorganizing of the United Nations human resources handbook (English and French) which is the online tool used by all the human resources practitioners and staff at large.

? Establishes internal databases; sets up, files, stores and manages data and information relevant to the scope of unit activities.

? Perform other duties as assigned.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

 

?Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or

(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or

(c) have graduated with a university degree (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.

?Be computer literate in standard software applications;

?Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

?Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of French is highly desirable.
