Duration of assignments

The minimum service period is two weeks and the maximum, whetherunder one assignment or accumulated over several assignments, is four years.

Requirements

There is no typical profile for a national UN Volunteer. Eachnational UN Volunteer assignment is unique, and each has its own specificrequirements.

National UN Volunteers are entrusted with a wide variety of rolesand their duty stations range from capital cities to small villages.

The minimum age for a national UN Volunteer is 22 and there is noupper age limit. A minimal level of higher education and professionalcompetency is necessary.

Conditions of Service

National UN Volunteers receive a volunteer living allowance tosustain a basic, adequate and safe lifestyle. This allowance varies fromone location to another depending on local living costs.

The purpose of allowances for national UN Volunteers is to enablethe national UN Volunteers to sustain a modest and secure standard of living atthe duty station. The allowances are in no way to be understood as acompensation, reward or salary in exchange for the volunteer work.

However, all national UN Volunteers in the same location receive thesame allowance, regardless of age, qualifications and experience.

A one-time settling-in-grant helps the volunteer meet initialexpenses upon arrival at their duty station.

Travel and shipment allowances are paid on a case by case basis,depending on the location of the duty station.
